Understanding Measurements

Before we start talking about the process of measuring a diamond – one thing you must understand carefully is the measurement of a diamond.

  • Size: Also known as dimensions, the size of a fancy-shaped diamond can be measured with depth and length, while for round diamonds, diameter is the most important part.
  • Weight: Aka carat, of a diamond, is the unit of weight, and one carat is 200 mg, or 0.2 grams.
  • 4Cs: Coming last in line, we have 4Cs which define that measuring a diamond value also includes Clarity, Cut, and Color.

Tools & Tricks You Need

Ruler

Using a ruler with a millimeter marking is the easiest way of estimating the diamond’s width, length, and diameter for unmounted stones.

Paper & Pencil

With paper and pencil, you can use the trick to trace the outline of your diamond, which is helpful in giving you a rough idea of the surface area.

Ruler

  • Round Diamonds:
  1. Rest the diamond on a flat surface, with the top facet kept in the upward direction.
  2. Use the ruler to measure the distance of the widest part of your diamond’s table, and note it down in mm.
  3. If you want to measure the depth, then carefully position the diamond and measure the height from the top to the bottom, till the pointed part.
  • Fancy Diamonds:
  1. Understand the longest and widest points of your diamond.
  2. Measure the distance between noted points and note them down in mm.
  3. If you want to measure the depth, then measure the height from the top to the bottom (from the table to the cutlet).

Paper & Pencil

  1. Rest your diamond on the white paper or surface, and hold it carefully.
  2. Then, with a sharp pencil, trace the outline of its widest part from the middle point.
  3. Next, use a ruler to measure the longest distance from the traced outline on the surface, which will be your estimated diameter.
  4. Do the same with the shortest distance, and note these measurements in mm.

Final Words

Measuring a diamond at home is not a big deal as long as you’re not hoping for an accurate estimate — because these tricks and tools can only give you an approximate sum.

With that, we have reached the end of this article, and we hope you now know how to measure a diamond at home.
